| Description of the Northeast Florida World AIDS Day Committee |
| The mission of the Northeast Florida World AIDS Day Committee is to remember those who have died and recognize those who are infected and affected with HIV/AIDS through education, outreach, services and information. The Committee strives to be a member of global efforts to remember those we have lost, honor those who have lost loved ones, celebrate those who are living with the virus, and arrest the spread of HIV to others. The purpose of the Committee is to 1) plan events of World AIDS Week, 2) provide an environment that promotes collaboration of individuals and community organizations and 3) provide information and education to community providers and residents in order to increase accessibility and visibility of HIV related issues. The Committee endeavors to maintain a strong and diverse partnership capable of bringing every affected group together to participate in an annual community-wide week of events. The Committee enjoys its greatest success through an intensive collaboration that maintains representatives from various organizations such as: The Duval County Health Department, Area 4 AIDS Program Office, Riverside Baptist Church, St. Lukes Community Church, Planned Parenthood of Northeast Florida, the Northeast Florida NAMES Project, Positive Healthcare, AIDS Healthcare Foundation, the Northeast Florida AIDS Network, Lutheran Social Services ACE Program, the Minority AIDS Coalition, the City of Jacksonville, CommCare Pharmacy, Gilead Sciences, The Rainbow Center for Children, Adolescents & Families, the PLWHA Committee for Ryan White Part A , Shands Jacksonville and River Region Human Services. Through a series of well-organized events involving the public, HIV+ individuals, AIDS service organizations, educational and religious leaders, the schedule of activities offer something for everyone while generating a remarkably high amount of media attention for HIV/AIDS. The Committee has developed a tentative calendar of events for the week surrounding World AIDS Day and has fine-tuned these events based on public response and committee analysis. |
